Arjan van Hees

Arjan van Hees (1981) is married to Mirjam and together they’ve got a son, Thomas and two daughters, Mathilde and Judith. In July 2019, Arjan obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theology at VU Amsterdam. Arjan studied conducting, church music, and organ at various conservatories in the Netherlands. At the conservatory in Utrecht, Arjan took up a master course in choral conducting and organ studies. In addition, he studied vocal music at the Artez conservatory with Lodewijk Meeuwsen as well as the conservatory in Utrecht with Jose Lieshout. Arjan is currently the conductor of the Gelders Vocaal Ensemble (Apeldoorn). He has held previous conducting positions at COV Deo Cantemus (Hoogeveen), Dierens Mannenkoor (Dieren), and ProCanTi (Tiel). As an organist, Arjan is affiliated with Vierhuis van 's Heeren Loo, Apeldoorn.

CONDUCTOR - TEACHER Conductor: At seventeen, Arjan began conducting choirs. To further professionalise in this field and develop his talents even more, he decided to study choir conducting at a conservatory (music academy). During his studies, Arjan took an interest in and learned more about speech-language pathology. As a result, some of the main issues he pays attention to during choir practice are comprehensible speech, tonal purity, and an overarching, even choir sound. Arjan feels a conductor should possess significant knowledge of singing and vocal qualities. He himself was taught singing by Lodewijk Meeuwsen and José Lieshout. In June 2014, Arjan obtained his bachelor’s degree in choir conducting, and consequently earned a master’s degree in choir conducting at the Utrecht conservatory, having been taught by Rob Vermeulen. Teacher: At Arjan’s studio, you are welcome to take up lessons in organ and piano playing, but also in singing and conducting. Each student goes by his or her own learning speed, and so the lessons are adjusted accordingly. To Arjan, it is important that a student heads home feeling content, then continues his or her development at home and eventually returns for the next lesson well-prepared. All motivated students are welcome! As an organ teacher, Arjan was previously affiliated with music school Markant (Stichting Centrum voor Kunsteducatie) in Apeldoorn and with Quintus (Centrum voor Kunst en Kunsteducatie) in Kampen. For quite a while now, Arjan has been teaching music to motivated students at his own studio. A student’s starting level of skill is irrelevant – both beginning and advanced students are welcome!
